Mobility Matters – Transportation

Central Virginia Alliance for Community Living, Inc. offers three distinct transportation programs supporting individuals without the ability to travel for medical care and treatments. All programs offer wheelchair accessible vehicles and provide door-thru-door assistance.

Dial-A-Ride

Dial-A-Ride provides individuals age 60 and over with transportation to medical appointments, medical care (Dialysis, physical therapy, counseling), pharmacies, and grocery stores. Wheelchair accessible vans are available. Interested individuals may contact the CVACL office for assessment and enrollment information. Once approved, and with 48 hours notice, CVACL will coordinate safe, reliable rides for medically related transportation, Call 434-385-9070 between 8:30 and 4:30 to learn how to apply. Individuals enrolled in Medicaid plans are not eligible for CVACL medical transportation (but may qualify for non-Medicaid eligible appointments).

Transportation is provided on a first-come-first-serve basis for appointments between the hours of 8:30am and 2:30pm. Currently, no “On Demand” transportation is available. Those needing medical emergency transportation should call 911. When CVACL offices are closed for holidays or inclement weather, transportation is not available. CVACL applies a sliding-scale fee for service assessment prior to receipt of service. Income and medical expenses are taken into consideration. Many low-income individuals receive this service for free.

New Freedom Transportation

This program is named after what it provides! The program allows adults 21+ who are living with a disability the “new freedom” of transportation to medical appointments, pharmacies, and grocery stores.

This non-emergency transportation system is operated in conjunction with the Dial-A-Ride program. Interested individuals may contact the CVACL office for assessment and enrollment information.  Once approved, and with 48 hours notice, CVACL will coordinate safe, reliable rides for medically related transportation, Call 434-385-9070 between 8:30 and 4:30 to learn how to apply.
